Architectural Decision Records (ADR) on implementing DevOps Platform for Software Systems.

2. Context

As our organization scales, the need for a robust DevOps platform has become critical. We aim to streamline our development and operations processes, improve deployment efficiency, and enhance collaboration between development and operations teams. A comprehensive DevOps platform will facilitate continuous integration (CI), continuous delivery (CD), automated testing, and monitoring.

      Comprehensive DevOps Lifecycle Management.

    • Integration and Compatibility

      The platform must seamlessly integrate with our existing tools and technology stack (e.g. Git, Docker, Kubernetes).

    • Ease of Use

      The platform should have a user-friendly interface and provide comprehensive documentation.

    • Scalability

      The platform must be able to scale with the growth of the organization.

    • Security

      The platform must offer robust security features, including role-based access control, encryption, and audit logs.

    • Cost

      The total cost of ownership should be within our budget constraints.

3. Decision

3.1. GitLab

GitLab is selected as the DevOps platform due to its comprehensive lifecycle management, self-hosted deployment capabilities, and seamless integration with Git, Docker, and Kubernetes, providing a single application for the entire DevOps workflow.

    • Comprehensive

      GitLab provides a single application for the entire DevOps Lifecycle Management, from Source Code Management, built-in CI/CD capabilities, Container Registry, Security and Compliance, Community and Support, and Performance Monitoring. This reduces the complexity of managing multiple tools and integrations.

    • Integration and Compatibility

      GitLab offers seamless integration with Git repositories and supports Docker and Kubernetes. It also provides integrations with numerous third-party tools commonly used in our technology stack. GitLab offers a self-hosted version that can be deployed on-premises or in our preferred cloud environment, giving us full control over our infrastructure, security, and compliance.

    • Ease of Use

      GitLab has a user-friendly interface and is well-documented. It provides an integrated environment for managing repositories, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring, reducing the complexity of toolchain integration.

    • Scalability

      GitLab's architecture supports horizontal scaling, handling increased workloads and growing project numbers. Its architecture supports distributed execution of CI/CD pipelines.

    • Security

      GitLab provides robust security features, including role-based access control, encrypted secrets management, and comprehensive audit logs. It also supports compliance with industry standards.

    • Cost

      GitLab offers a competitive pricing model. The open-source version is free, and the paid versions provide additional features and support at a reasonable cost.

4. Considered

4.1. Jenkins

Jenkins is an open-source automation server with a large plugin ecosystem for building, deploying, and automating software projects.

  • Pros

    • Extensibility

      Highly extensible with a wide plugin ecosystem supporting a broad range of integrations and workflows.

    • Open Source

      Fully open-source with strong self-managed capabilities and no licensing costs.

  • Cons

    • Maintenance Overhead

      Requires significant configuration and maintenance; plugins can introduce instability.

    • Setup Complexity

      High setup and maintenance overhead compared to more integrated solutions.

4.2. GitLab

GitLab is a complete DevOps platform delivered as a single application, providing source code management, CI/CD, container registry, and security tools.

    • Comprehensive Lifecycle

      Comprehensive DevOps lifecycle management, self-managed capabilities, robust source code management, project management tools, integrated CI/CD, Kubernetes and Container support, scalability, strong security and compliance features, large community and support.

  • Cons

    • Learning Curve

      Initial learning curve, potential migration challenges for existing projects and repositories, additional responsibility for managing and maintaining the self-hosted environment, may have higher costs for premium features.

4.3. Azure DevOps

Azure DevOps is an enterprise-grade suite from Microsoft providing Azure Pipelines, Azure Repos, and Azure Boards for end-to-end software delivery.

  • Pros

    • Enterprise Grade

      Enterprise-grade platform with deep integration with Microsoft products and a comprehensive suite including Azure Pipelines, Azure Repos, and Azure Boards.

  • Cons

    • Microsoft Ecosystem

      Better suited for organizations heavily invested in the Microsoft ecosystem. Potentially high costs for scaling. Primarily a cloud-based solution, the self-managed version (Azure DevOps Server) is less feature-rich and requires significant effort to manage.

4.4. CircleCI

CircleCI is a cloud-native CI/CD platform with excellent Docker support and YAML-based pipeline configuration.

      Fast and efficient CI/CD with excellent Docker support and easy configuration with YAML.

  • Cons

    • Scope

      Primarily focused on CI/CD, lacks integrated project management tools and broader DevOps lifecycle management. Limited self-managed capabilities.

4.5. GitHub

GitHub is a widely used code hosting and collaboration platform with GitHub Actions for CI/CD automation.

  • Pros

    • Community

      Widely used platform with seamless integration with GitHub Actions for CI/CD and strong community and collaboration features.

  • Cons

    • Lifecycle Coverage

      Limited in terms of integrated DevOps lifecycle features and security management. GitHub Enterprise Server offers self-managed hosting, but with less comprehensive DevOps capabilities.

4.6. Bitbucket

Bitbucket is a Git-based code hosting platform from Atlassian with native integration with Jira and Bitbucket Pipelines for CI/CD.

  • Pros

    • Atlassian Integration

      Integration with Jira and other Atlassian tools, with Bitbucket Pipelines for CI/CD.

  • Cons

    • Ecosystem

      Less extensible than other platforms, smaller plugin ecosystem, primarily suited for Atlassian ecosystems. Bitbucket Server offers self-managed hosting but lacks the breadth of features.

      Initial learning curve for teams unfamiliar with or transitioning to GitLab, requiring training and adjustment time.

    • Migration Effort

      Migrating existing CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure to GitLab will require effort and careful planning.

6. Implementation

  1. Training

    • Conduct training sessions for development and operations teams to familiarize them with GitLab.
  2. Pilot Project

    • Start with a pilot project to implement CI/CD pipelines and gather feedback.
  3. Migration

    • Gradually migrate existing CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure to GitLab, ensuring minimal disruption.
